Relinquishing Control For The Important Stuff πŸŽ›οΈ

Hi friends!

I've been having a ton of fun creating YouTube videos! I do have to admit though, that parts of the process (like editing) can be extremely time consuming. My vision is to eventually get to a place where I am able to easily outsource parts of the process to a team that works with / for me.

So I tried something out this week - I hired a video editor to help me edit my video just to see how things would go. I'm the sort of person who likes to have everything under my own control - so to relinquish control of the editing process was was incredibly uncomfortable for me.

My experience? It wasn't that great.

I got the cut of my video back really quickly, and it was just...okay. There were nuances here and there that was difficult to explain to my editor - so in the end, I actually ended up doing more editing on my own to complete my video (to a level of my own satisfaction). Perhaps it was my fault for not being more explicit with my request but I just was not keen on investing the extra time with this editor to teach or tell them what I wanted exactly - maybe because I knew I was not keen to work with him on further projects (because we both use different editing software as well).

However, this experience was really interesting as well. I do understand the upside: when I was waiting for my video to come back, I really felt like there was a load off my shoulders as I had extra time on my hands to do other things!

I think with most business owners / entrepreneurs, they often hold the role of multiple folks in the 'company'. They are the CEO, the manager, the editor, the crewman etc - so as businesses expand it is essential to start delegating these duties to your team so that you as the CEO can focus on the important stuff like driving the strategy and vision for the company.

It's tough to relinquish control. But once you decide to do so, there has got to be some sort of investment into the person you are working with - you need to take the time to show and teach them how you want things done! You've got to build the trust with them to make it work. Once all these are established: the magic begins!

I'm glad I tried outsourcing, but I'll probably still be editing my own videos for now! Perhaps I'll try outsourcing the editing again sometime soon.
